Shanghai General Information |
Shanghai literally means the city by the sea. Shanghai is situated at 31° 14' north latitude and 121° 29'east longitude, on the west shore of the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered on the north and west by Jiangsu Province , on the south by Zhejiang Province, and on the east by the East China Sea . Right in the middle of China's east coastline, Shanghai is an excellent sea and river port, boasting easy access to the vast hinterland.
The city is divided into two parts by the Huangpu River: Puxi (west of the Huangpu River) and Pudong (east of the Huangpu River). Puxi is the older part of the city and hosts the majority of shops, restaurants and museums. Pudong is the modern part, and is recognized for its rather unusual yet extremely impressive high-rises such as Shanghai's tallest buildings, the Shanghai International Financial Center, Jinmao Building and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
Due to constant inflow of people from other parts of the country, the size of population in Shanghai keeps growing. Before Shanghai was liberated in 1949, it only had a population of 5.2 million.According to the Shanghai Statistics Bureau, Shanghai's population of residents with permanent residence registration had grown to 24.15 million, among which 14.25 million were long-term residents and 9.9 million were immigrants by the end of 2013. |

The Bund (Wai Tan) is one of the symbols of Shanghai.
Located along the Huangpu River, the Bund shows off Shanghai’s outstanding foreign buildings, most of which were erected before 1937. To the Europeans, the Bund was Shanghai’s answer to Wall Street. |
The former, in accordance with documents was built during 1924-1925. It is 30m high which was almost the tallest building at the west end of Xiafei Road (former name of Huaihai Road). The style of the building belongs to French renaissance close to the Classicism. |
Jing An Si (Jing An Temple) dates back about seventeen centuries. A recent remodeling was accomplished using beautiful Burmese teak wood. The location of this temple makes it a lively and crowded place. There is a shopping center of the same name, a park, and restaurants in this area of Shanghai. |
As the only development zone entitled "finance and trade zone" in China, Lujiazui has been endowed with all the pilot projects since the development of the Pudong New Area. Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone will be built into a financial and trade center of China, even of the world. |

Shanghai Indoor Stadium is a multi-purpose gymnasium, in Shanghai, China.
Hailed as a great feat of engineering at the time of its construction, the building is now considered dated and out-classed by newly constructed sporting facilities nearby. It is now used mostly for entertainment events, rather than sporting competitions. |

The Shanghai French Concession was a foreign concession in Shanghai, China from 1849 until 1943, which progressively expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. For much of the 20th century, the area covered by the former French Concession remained the premier residential and retail district of Shanghai, and was also the centre of Catholicism in Shanghai. |

Duolun Road was built in 1911 and is today located in the Hongkou District of Shanghai. A residential street, the golden age of the road was in the 1920s and 30s, when it attracted writers and other prominent residents, giving it a reputation as a vibrant centre of thought and literature. |
Zhongshan Park is a common name for Chinese parks, in honour of Sun Yat-sen, better-known in Chinese as Sun Zhongshan, who is considered by many to be the "Father of modern China". People's square is a spectacular space in the heart of the city. It is a garden-type open space surrounded by buildings and facilities for administration, cultural activities, transportation and commerce. Tianzifang or Tian Zi Fang is an arts and crafts enclave that has developed from a renovated residential area.
The district comprises a neighborhood of labyrinthine alleyways off Taikang Road, and is therefore also referred to as Taikang Road or Taikang Lu. Tianzifang is known for small craft stores, coffee shops, trendy art studios and narrow alleys. It has become a popular tourist destination in Shanghai. |
